Piraeus Bank Supports Children from Odesa Region with Unforgettable Trip to Greece
01 October 2024

Piraeus Bank, in collaboration with the CF “Bumbouras Foundation” and at the initiative of the Consulate General of Greece in Odesa, proudly partnered with the Odesa Regional State Administration and the Odesa City Council to organize a memorable trip to Greece for nearly 100 children affected by the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.  These children have been affected in many ways by the war by losing parents, having suffered physical injuries, and many of them having fled their homes. Kids, hailing from the Odesa region, experienced a two-week break filled with the educational exploration of  Greece and some joy.

The main goal of this initiative was to offer these children an opportunity to temporarily escape the hardships of their everyday lives and immerse themselves in the beauty, history, and warmth of a friendly nation. This journey was a significant step in their emotional recovery, fostering psychological well-being and giving them hope for a brighter future. Most notably, the children were able to live in peace, free from air raid sirens and the threat of shelling, allowing them a much-needed pause from the realities of conflict.

During their stay, the children resided in a camp of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens and All Greece, located in the city of Avlona (Attica) situated near the peaceful Greek coastline, where they could enjoy the beach and engage in recreational activities. The camp offered a wide range of enriching experiences, including water sports, creative workshops and team-building games, all of which helped to boost their spirits and foster positive emotions.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the historic city of Athens. Here, the children explored iconic archaeological sites, visited renowned museums, and gained a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece. The experience provided them with valuable insights into how Greek civilization has shaped world culture. Additionally, the children enjoyed walking through the lively streets of modern Athens, discovering its contemporary life, and creating lasting memories.

Yannis Kyriakopoulos, CEO of Piraeus Bank in Ukraine, commented on the initiative:
"We are honored to having contributed to this meaningful initiative. This trip provided the children with positive emotions and helped them feel connected to and supported by the broader international community. A big gratitude to all the partners involved and a special mention to the Church of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens of all Greece for being so hospitable to children from Ukraine once more."

Piraeus Bank is committed to supporting initiatives that have a positive impact on society and believes in the power of such experiences to foster healing, hope, and unity.
